Candace Bryan: Comrade Cowboy (WIP)
It is an irrefutable fact that—with their stoic personalities and iconic style—cowboys are cool.
A traumatic childhood led American comedian Candace Bryan to admire cowboys, and for years she has emulated their reserved nature. You can’t control the world around you, but you can control your emotions. Why cry when you can simply puff a Marlboro cigarette and ride off into the sunset?
Lately, though, Candace has begun to question this admiration and her own stoic tendencies. Faced with political and personal turmoil, she’s now wondering: Is coolness a virtue?
Punchline-dense, deadpan, and very silly, Candace’s new show explores the idea of coolness in late capitalism, questions the philosophy that controlling your emotions leads to freedom, and makes a solid case for why there should be a crying-cowboy emoji.
